How to recharge a prepaid meter in Nigeria
Updated
Quick answer
Buy a token for your meter number from your electricity company (DISCO) or an approved vendor, then type the 20-digit token into your meter’s keypad and press Enter. The units are added straight away.
Find your meter number
Your meter number is printed on the front of the meter, usually on a sticker or label. It is also on your old token receipts and on bills. Most prepaid meter numbers are 11 or 13 digits. A token only works on the meter it was bought for, so copy the number carefully.
Buy the token online
- Fund your VTU Agent wallet by bank transfer or card.
- Open Pay Electricity and choose your DISCO, then prepaid.
- Enter your meter number. We show the name and address on the account, so you can check it’s the right meter.
- Enter the amount and confirm with your PIN. The token shows on screen and stays in your history.
Choose your electricity company:
Load the token on your meter
- Type the 20-digit token on the meter’s keypad. Ignore the spaces.
- Press Enter. On many meters it is the blue key or the key marked with an arrow or #.
- The meter shows a success message, then your new unit balance.
If your token is rejected
- Check the meter number on the receipt matches the one on your meter.
- Type the token again slowly; one wrong digit makes the whole token fail.
- If the meter says the token was already used, it may have loaded the first time. Check your unit balance.
- Still not working? Contact support with the transaction reference from your history.
